Mothership Connection (Star Child)

Well alright!!!! (c) Starchild

I figured I’d give some background on myself for those that really care and those who may just be curious.

I was born in Limestone, Maine to Darrell & Cheryl Williams as the baby brother of Danielle. Pops was in the United States Air Force and Moms is a nurse…I was raised by a general and a softie. However it all worked out as I grew up in Lafayette, Indiana; Victorville, California; Lubbock, Texas; and Dayton, Ohio.

I’ve always heard apples don’t fall too far from the tree…well then I guess I fell and hit the tree. The vibe of Pops is in my blood very heavy in my everyday operations. Moms is there, but not nearly as much as Pops. And what I got from Pops was music (make my funk the PFunk) and he gave me quite a bit…and what he didn’t have Moms supplied in the form of music to clean the house to and how to dance and look cool doing it (see me at your local dancefloor doing nothing but moves from the 70s).

Being the researcher that I’ve always been, I used to dig through the records they had (which I now have) and just throw random vinyl on deck. I’d just sit and listen to all sorts of music from PFunk to Prince to Christopher Cross and Hall & Oates or some Spyro Gyra and George Benson along with a list of other stuff I can’t begin to name…this is how I spent my summers. I’d get up, listen to vinyl because Pops would flip if I was messing with his turntable and he saw me but he’d be at work and then I’d go outside and tear up the neighborhood with Isley Brothers in my head as a soundtrack to my day. Or I’d guess how many instruments I heard and what instruments in certain songs then read the liner notes to see if I was right…and usually I was close if not correct.

So when I got to high school, I was already well-versed in music that was around before my birth…before my parents even met…hell, some stuff before they were born. And it was kinda hard to talk to my friends about the string section on Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly album without being looked at funny (I was kinda chubby in 9th and 10th grade so it probably just added to shit) but I did it any damn way.

I learned that music was a lot more than a mix of tones, pitches, instruments, and voices…it was something that would save me from myself on numerous occasions and was becoming a watermark in different parts of life…

  • the first girl I really liked: Ginuwine “Differences”
  • the first time I sipped on drank…and got to’ down: Youngbloodz “Damn”
  • the first time I fell in love: India.Arie “The Truth”
  • the song that changed my life forever: Kanye West “Spaceship”
  • the time I really thought I couldn’t take it anymore: 2Pac “So Many Tears”
  • when I realized that my Moms gave me “game”: Big Pun “I’m Not A Player”
  • when we started talking more: Pharrell “That Girl”
  • when we split: The Spinners “How Could I Let You Get Away”
  • the theme song for whatever woman I get with for real: Tony Toni Tone “Whatever You Want”
  • when I moved to Naptown and resumed my superhero job and let it all hang out: Kinetik’s Ebony & Ivory: Broken Keys Bear Sound
  • when I decided to make this blog: Stevie Wonder “Visions”

…and those are just the watermarks that came to mind the quickest, but I got a song for everyday I’ve lived and everything that’s ever happened………..that’s why if you talk to me ever, I randomly spit out lyrics…its not really even random, its how I think, feel, live, and love…thru the best gift ever given to me…the best companion I’ve ever known…music (hey Boogie, I don’t just like it…I love it.)

I hope it clears some things up for somebody out there…any questions? Holla at me.

Swing down sweet chariot stop and…let me riiiiiiiiide (c) Parliament
